Texas used to pride itself in being the biggest state in the union, until Alaska came along. But Texas is still big and Texans won't let you forget it.

The Lone Star State entered the Union as the 28th state in 1845. The capital is Austin and the state population is about 21,000,000. This is the second most populous state, after California. Sports teams include the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers (Baseball); Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks, (Basketball); Houston Comets (Women's Basketball); Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans (Football); Dallas Stars (Hockey). Sights to see in Texas include the Alamo in San Antonio, Gulf Coast resort area, Lyndon Johnson Space Center in Houston, State Capital in Austin, and the Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks. The longest river in Texas is the Rio Grande at 1300 miles, which forms the border between Texas and Mexico.

It's a common misconception that Dallas (population 1.2 million) is the largest city in Texas. But even if you combine Dallas with neighboring Fort Worth (population 585,000), it's not as big as Houston, which has over 2 million inhabitants. San Antonio also has about 1.2 million people, so is about the same size as Dallas. The capital at Austin only has 672,000.

President George W. Bush has had a ranch home in Crawford, Texas, since 1999.
